Learn how to Taste Different Spirits
Spirits vary quite a bit from type to type and it’s fun to sip some different spirits while learning the essentials. This spirits tasting class is for anyone that wants to learn a little more about the different main spirits while sipping on a few samples. Production methods and raw materials strongly affect what we find in the bottle. Post-distillation operations also have a significant impact on the colour and aromas of that final spirit.
Select Evenings from 6PM to 8:30PM
We start off the evening outlining the systematic approach to tasting. When we know what kind of glassware should be used for tasting spirits, we can then find a well lit environment to assess colour. Nosing the spirit will reveal aromas and adding some water will help reveal more subtle tastes. We have a small booklet that you can take some notes in too.
What Spirits are used as tasting samples?
Come learn the basics about your essential spirits in just a few hours. Knowing all the spirits really does take a lifetime to fully appreciate. This is a ‘sit and sip’ class. There is no test. This is meant to be a class for tasting and discussion while learning the fundamentals that make each spirit unique. We will explore the following over the course of 2.5 hours.
- Vodka… to understand a baseline neutral spirit
- Liqueur (maybe two)
- Gin
- Vermouth
- Amaro
- Tequila
- Amber Rum
- Brandy
We won’t be getting into Whiskies on this night. Check out our dedicated tasting night for whiskies which we run every 5-6 weeks. We also do a Wine Tasting Seminar focused on wine essentials. Check out our short video of what things are like on that Wine Tasting Night.
Who Comes to Taste Different Spirits?
We keep this classes open to everyone. We find our bartending students join us for an evening of tasting, and convince a friend to come along too. Anyone that wants to learn some essentials about wine or whiskies has been coming to our special tasting nights for the last few years now.
This spirit tasting seminar is meant to educate. We have based our tasting methods on the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting, since we also run spirits certification classes every couple months too. Granted you won’t be an expert by the end of the class, but you will learn quite a bit in a short amount of time.
We’re getting into 8 very different samples. By the end of the class you will have a sense of what makes up each spirit or liqueur. Hands on spirits tasting along with some helpful insight from an instructor makes for a fun night of learning.
